My 5yr old son's sudden misbehavior at home and now at school

Hello,
My name is Vanessa I have a 5 yr old son we've been living with my parents being as I'm a single parent and my late mother was ill and needed taking care of. My son has never none anything but grandma and grandpa live with us.

July of 2015 my mother passed away and since about October my son has just did a complete turn around he won't listen he says not horrible things to us but not very nice. He talks back and it's now started at school not listening, being disruptive, poking his peers, sticking tongue out at his teacher. I've tried talking to giving positive discipline I've taken favorite items from him he just doesn't seem to care. I'm so lost and to make things worse I don't have a mom I can ask for advice. I really want to raise a great kid.

Help! My son is grieving
by: Sara

Hi Vanessa,

First let me say, I am so very sorry for your loss. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

Your son is grieving. This is a little different than typical behavior issues. It's actually a good thing that the behavior is happening both at home and at school. That's a sign that he isn't just being a pain, he's really IN pain.

Lots and lots of hugs! Encourage him to talk about his feelings, and reach out for professional help. The school counselor may be able to help, and may be able to connect you to resources. Many hospitals offer grief counseling services, as do many churches.

Rest assured, your son is indeed a great kid, he doesn't know how to process his pain. He is missing his grandma.

Peace and love you to you!
